Carlyle Labuschagne Work

I was very lucky over the course of 2012 to do a lot of work for author Carlyle Labuschagne. An up and coming author from South Africa.

This is just a few of the pieces I've made for Carlyle for the launch of her book: The Broken Destiny. To see more pieces, click HERE

Carlyle Labuschagne, the author

Carlyle has written a book… more correctly a SERIES, called The Broken. The first book is called The Broken Destiny.
I’m very privileged to share this interview with her. I may share more in the future. The ORIGINAL interview can be found on Eri Nelson’s Blog and the ENTIRE interview will be up in November 2012 for you to read. – And is already up for you to read.
The book trailors are also on youtube:
I've taken the questions and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, the answers that spoke to me. I've taken a bit about the book and some things that just stood out to me.
(Plus I am a huge sci-fi/fiction freak so to share this is again a privilege!!
THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
D.H.: What inspired you to become a writer in the first place?
Carlyle: My need to create and share. I started writing when I was twelve.  Why I wrote a novel – I want to touch lives. Writing helps me understand myself better too. It heals you know.
D.H.: What piece of advice can you give to a struggling / new writer?
Carlyle: Never doubt yourself. Write every day. Read a lot, rewrite. Be patient.
D.H.: What genre or genres does The Broken series fall into?  Can you explain what elements make it fall into any of those categories?
Carlyle: Fiction, Fantasy, Sci-fi and somewhat dystopian.
Well the fact that it takes place on a different planet, advanced technology and gene alteration make it unmistakably Sci-Fi. Dystopian in a way because The Broken are controlled and manipulated by the council.
D.H.: Does Destiny have a message?
Carlyle: Most definitely
A: The message itself would be another novel on its own. I love this question. I have many messages.
Every person in their lives at one stage or another will seek approval, will feel unwanted, the world will be cruel to you. No matter who or what you are , you deserve love, but mostly loving yourself and believing in yourself is the key to giving you what your heart desires. If you truly want it, and you believe you deserve it, God will give it to you, if you don’t believe in God, at least believe in yourself. Humans are the gem of everything, we are strong and beautiful and magical beings. If you live in fear – you will be crippled by it, If you live with love – you can reach beyond your dreams. Live your dreams , they can come true at any time at any moment , your dreams are waiting for you to let them in. No one can save you , you are the only one capable of saving yourself.
I don’t want to give too much away about the book. All I know is that I am very excited for it to come out and read it!

What I Thought of the Book:
I was extremely lucky to receive a copy of The Broken Destiny on my birthday, last week Thursday. I spent my weekend getting lost in it.
I read A LOT of sci-fi books as I am a MAJOR Dean Koontz fan, so I do know my way around the genre and I love getting lost in that world
The best part of Carlyle’s book was that it felt like home. I was reading sci-fi FROM SOUTH AFRICA. Every time I read the word “Afrikaans” or “Zulus” and “Muti”, my heart would skip an actual beat. I didn’t expect it AT ALL to have South African roots. I’m glad it did because it made this book unique and SPECIAL to me.
Carlyle really did blow my mind with how she depicted Poseidon. I could see the world come alive, the colours and the trees, the beach and the sand. I saw it in my mind come to life. The technology that she describes in the Art school also blew my mind – how the computer is programmed to know their favourite soaps to shower with, the phone devices, how she uses her laptop. It really did blow my mind. Sometimes I had to stop and check that I WAS reading her book and that she really is from South Africa.
She made the story come alive and it was so hard to not get lost in it that every spare minute I had I just wanted to read. I judge a book on its first chapter and after that first chapter, I was excited to know more and learn more.
I see only success for Carlyle as well as the Broken Series… I cannot wait for Evanescent to come out!!!
